Open Universe
The Story
How and why Open Universe began, and where it's going.

Open Universe is a Miami-based nonprofit building a home for contemporary art by artists with disabilities working in supportive studios, artists the art world has historically left out.
It was founded by Ross McCalla (Co-Founder & Executive Director) and David Fierman (Co-Founder & Artistic Director). It began in December 2024 with an art fair that connects progressive studios to the global art market, opened a gallery for artists of determination in 2025, and now brings its programs together under a single nonprofit.
Progressive studios are among the most important creative ecosystems in contemporary art. Our work presents these artists not as charity, therapy, or outsider novelty, but as urgent, original, and culturally essential art.
